Hearing loss - the most common causes

There are quite a few causes of hearing loss. The most common causes of hearing loss are exposure to loud noises, natural aging, heredity, head injury, ototoxic medications and illness.

Some of the causes are rare; like diabetes, measles or sleep apnea. However, many causes of hearing loss tend to make more sense: like earwax buildup or a perforated eardrum.

Believe it or not, the top two causes of hearing loss are aging (simply growing older), and loud noise exposure (either steadily over a period of time or sudden and extremely high decibel sound).

If, in fact, you do suffer from hearing loss, it helps to know and understand what caused it. If you know the cause, it’s then easier to determine the best course of action for treatment. When you arrange an appointment with a hearing healthcare professional, they can help determine both the cause, and how to best treat the hearing loss.
